Bodie 2012 Volunteer Notice

Bodie State Historic Park is looking for a few good volunteers!

Contact us now to reserve a spot for a training class scheduled for Saturday, September 15, 2012. This class will prepare you for volunteer duties in the 2013 season (Memorial Day Weekend through Labor Day Weekend). Space is limited for this training. You’ll learn how to develop and present interpretive programs, how to interact with visitors and all about the wonderful history of Bodie.

Purpose:

The purpose of Bodie’s volunteer program is to augment and enhance our summer interpretive program. Volunteers can accomplish this by being available for additional tours and providing information to visitors while roving the park.

There are also opportunities for those interested in maintenance duties. Volunteers engaged in primarily maintenance duties are still required to attend this training.

Volunteer Benefits:

  • You will gain valuable public speaking skills and learn about the role Bodie played in California history. You’ll gain an appreciation of the natural and cultural history of the area and enjoy the satisfaction of serving visitors from all over the country and the world.
  • After donating 50 hours a year, volunteers receive a one-year pass for day-use to all Sierra District State Parks. After donating 200 hours, a pass is issued for free day-use to all California State Parks for the following year.
  • Through your contribution of time and energy, the public will have a better understanding, awareness and appreciation of our cultural resources at Bodie, the California State Park System and the Bodie Foundation, our non-profit cooperating association.

Qualifications:

  • California State Park Volunteers at Bodie must be 18 years old, able to move around easily and present programs at an altitude of 8,375 feet.
  • You must be reliable and committed.
  • You are required to log a minimum of 8 hours a month during the season.
  • Volunteers must be fingerprinted and disclose any past criminal convictions.

There are three main opportunities for volunteers:

  • Present a 30-minute talk on the history of Bodie or a stamp mill tour.
  • Rove the park providing interpretation and information to visitors.
  • Maintenance opportunities, which include small carpentry projects.
